Therapy
What is therapy?
Therapy involves both talking to a professional about the things that you are struggling with and making changes in your life to improve wellbeing. At The PAT Clinic our treatment is family based. Young people struggling with mental health have the best outcomes when caregivers are involved in treatment.

What will therapy look like?
Treatment for children typically includes family in sessions and treatment for adolescents usually includes a combination of individual sessions for the young person, parent sessions, and family sessions. Parent consultations are also available. Sessions are 50 minutes long. We also offer group therapy (please see our Groups page for more details).

Assessment
What is a psychological assessment?
A psychological assessment is an in depth evaluation of a person’s thinking, learning, and attentional skills, as well as their social-emotional and behavioural functioning. Psychological assessments help to identify unique strengths and needs and provide recommendations for support. We use standardized measures to assess areas related to cognitive functioning, information processing, academic skills, and social-emotional functioning.

What types of assessments do you do?
Our psychologists provide assessments in the following areas:
-
Psychoeducational Assessments (e.g. identifying learning strengths and needs, identifying learning disabilities, ADHD, or intellectual disabilities)
-
Social-emotional Assessments (e.g. depression, anxiety)
-
Assessment for College/University purposes
What do assessments look like?
Assessments are tailored to the client and referral questions. While the format can be modified and adapted to the client’s needs, assessments are usually completed over multiple visits and involve the following components:
-
Intake interview with child and caregivers (~2 hours)
-
Information gathering from multiple sources (e.g., questionnaires completed by the client and other informants; review of report cards, etc.)
-
One-to-one testing (~6 hours)
-
Feedback session to review results and recommendations (~1 hour)
A report is provided at the end of the assessment that can be shared with the school and other relevant professionals.

FEES
Our clinic charges a fee for service. Our fees follow the recommendations outlined by the Ontario Psychological Association and the average fees being charged across the province.
Fees for therapy are $225 per 50 minute session (+10 minutes for preparation and documentation). Additional tasks over and above basic administrative tasks, such as consultation with school staff or another health professional, documentation/file review, are also charged at our hourly rate.
Fees for assessment range depending on the complexity and time required. Most full assessments cost an average of $3500.
Our services are not covered by OHIP; however many insurance plans cover all or part of the costs associated with seeing a registered Psychologist. The remaining, non-reimbursed fees may be claimed as a medical expense on your tax returns. Following each visit, you will receive a receipt outlining the services.
We believe everyone deserves access to funded mental health care and so we encourage you to also explore the publicly funded services in your community and inquire about joining waitlists.
